A Short Story Writer Who Doesn’t Obey Army Orders

A Story by Ziad Khadash  - A Short Story Project

The Story

This story is about an Arab writer who, while on his way to meet a widow in Nablus to discuss turning her extraordinary life into a novel, faces the harsh reality of life under the Arab-Israeli conflict. As he navigates the oppressive atmosphere of multiple Israeli army checkpoints, he attempts to use his knowledge of the Israeli author Etgar Keret to avoid humiliation and violence from the soldiers.

What makes this story worth reading, and how does it contribute to our understanding of contemporary Israel?

This story is worth your time because it offers a raw and humanizing perspective on the daily struggles of Arabs living in the disputed territories. Through the narrator's experiences, it exposes the psychological and physical toll of navigating a landscape marked by checkpoints, military control, and the constant threat of violence.

The use of Etgar Keret, an Israeli author, by an Arab writer to evade violence creates a distinctive intersection of literature, politics, culture, and daily life. It illustrates how both sides of the conflict influence each other and how culture can serve as both a refuge and a battleground.
