Administrative Districts (Mehozot)

The State of Israel's administrative organization is based on three levels of governance:

  • The Central Government,

  • Districts,

  • Local entities.

The State of Israel, through the Ministry of the Interior, is divided into seven main administrative districts, known as mehozot (singular: mahoz).

The Judea and Samaria districts and parts of the Jerusalem and Northern districts are not recognized internationally as part of Israel and are managed by the Ministry of Interior.

Each of these districts has a capital, district government offices, a district court, and other institutions.

The districts have no elected institutions of any kind, although they do possess councils composed of representatives of central government ministries and local authorities for planning and building purposes.
